Episode 06. Math in 2022. Solving for ‘Why’

Rod Berger
March 25, 2024

Dr. Rod Berger speaks with Dr. Emille Lawrence about the legacy perception problem within math and the bright future ahead.

Math has historically been seen as something to be endured with correct answer expectation driving anxiety and restricting people from the enjoyment math can bring. Dr. Lawrence sees how things are changing and the ‘why’ math is important is resoundingly being answered. Math is being brought out of the shadows and its connection to our everyday lives is finally allowing the benefits to be realized.

Issues remain, however, and Dr. Lawrence highlights where she believes we can do more. Math is the gatekeeper to higher education, opening opportunities for those capable yet stunting access to a world of possibilities for those not supported in their learning journey.

The discussion flows from the current state of math and our need to widen the scope of our math education system to the rewards of being an educator.
