Student Discourse
close icon

Student discourse

Students engaged in a discussion focused on understanding each other’s thinking and connecting it to underlying mathematics. Often facilitated by a teacher, sometimes supported by an instructional routine.

Teacher Support

Teacher Support

Magma supports teachers in a number of ways. We provide immediate support via Intercom during the work day. Additionally, we have support for using Magma via help menus in Intercom and on our website. Additionally, we support teachers within Magma by identifying common errors and “good” solutions in the heat map, and by creating a bulleted list of how a student did on an assignment (the AI assignment summary).  Additionally, we provide support for teachers on our website through Magma Academy and from our blog posts and articles.

Student Engagement

Student Engagement

Student engagement is so much more than students raising their hands, answering & asking questions. We know students are engaged when they are actively solving math problems, creating solutions, and reading and critiquing the solutions of other students.

For each state we have created books of content that are aligned with the state standards.

Our work with Wyckoff helped students build confidence in math by showing their reasoning, not just results.

Math Proficiency

Math Proficiency

Math proficiency is made up of several interrelated strands - the most commonly understood being conceptual understanding and procedural fluency. In addition students who are mathematically proficient have strategic competence, adaptive reasoning, and a productive disposition. This definition comes from Adding it Up, from the National Research Council (https://nap.nationalacademies.org/catalog/9822/adding-it-up-helping-children-learn-mathematics)

Collaborative Learning
close icon

Collaborative Learning

Students are engaged in collaborative learning when they are working a group of 2 or more students, and each student in the group is actively engaged in solving mathematical task(s). This might look like 3 students working at a vertical surface where they are passing one pen between them and the person writing is taking directions from their group-mates. It can also look like a group of students working in Magma Math on an assignment and then pausing for a think-pair-share in order to refine and revise their thinking.

Auto Grading
close icon

Auto Grading

Magma automatically marks each student solution as correct or incorrect, and teachers can see on the heatmap if students got a problem correct on the first attempt, after multiple attempts, not yet, or if they have not attempted the problem. Teachers can create rubrics for assignments for which they want to create number or letter grades to help students understand how they are doing and what they are aspiring to.

With Yuma School, we helped bring clarity to the math journey — making thinking visible and actionable.

Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking

Students engage in critical thinking when they are asked to solve a complex problem, and also when they are asked to make sense of another student’s solution that is different from their own. In Magma, teachers can engage students in critical thinking by having them compare and contrast solutions, or engage in a routine to identify errors in a worked solution.
